herbs

If you want the best flavors in your food, the best way to get them is by having fresh ingredients. The best way to have the freshest ingredients is to grow them yourself. Sure, you could go spend $5 on a little package of fresh basil or rosemary at the store, but for the same price you can have a whole plant of it that will produce for months or years.

There are many herbs that you can easily grow in your garden. Some of the most favored herbs are basil, oregano, parsley, chives, rosemary, lavender, tarragon, sage, thyme, dill, and marjoram. Luckily, most herbs don’t take up a lot of space, so you can grow many different kinds. They can be planted in containers, flower beds, or amongst your vegetables.

There are other great benefits for your garden by having herbs around. Most will flower, and the flowers will attract bees to fertilize the rest of your crops. They create shade between plants, keeping weeds down, and some, like cilantro, attract beneficial insects that will prey on pests. Most will reseed themselves if allowed to bolt, ensuring you’ll have fresh herbs next year too.

Take a look at the spices in your cabinet. What do you cook with? There’s a good chance that some of those ingredients could easily be grown in your garden. Imagine how great your sauce will be with fresh basil and oregano.
